For some reason, the following story on Slashdot had me cracking up

Microsoft Plans Gdrive Competitor

Posted by samzenpus on Wednesday April 19, @09:13PM
from the personal-virtual-bill dept.

gambit3 writes "From Microsoft Watch: The MSN team is working on a new Windows Live service, code-named Live Drive, that will provide users with a virtual hard drive for storing hosted personal data. From early accounts, it sounds an awful lot like Gdrive, the still-as-yet-publicly-unannounced storage service from Google."

I have to agree with Mike Torres, 2006 is really 1998 in disguise. With the release of Google Page Creator, Google Finance, Google Calendar and the upcoming GDrive (aka Yahoo! GeoCities, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Calendar and Yahoo! Briefcase knockoffs) it is now clear to me that Google's master plan is to become Yahoo! 2.0. On the other hand, with some of the recent Windows Live announcements we seem to be giving the impression that we are chasing Google's tail lights who in turn is chasing Yahoo! tail lights who in turn is chasing the tail lights of various 'Web 2.0' startups. Crazy.

I wonder what Google will do when they run out of Yahoo! services to copy?

It is funny, especially considering how Google explicitly positioned themselves in their early days as the anti-Yahoo -- we're not a portal, we don't do chat or financial advice or dating services or any of that other stuff, we're a search company.

Then the VCs came in and suddenly everything old was new again!

Coincidence? Hmmm... :-)

Amusing, Dare, but it is also true that Yahoo stopped innovating on these services. Yahoo Finance and My Yahoo, in particular, sat for years without noticeable improvements.

Isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

Interesting. A Microsoft employee commenting how Google doesn't have original ideas/products.

Hello pot? I'm kettle...

So? Go read http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/ad-hominem.html then come back with a better criticism.

"I wonder what Google will do when they run out of Yahoo! services to copy?"

Probably rename their existing services to "Google Live X" where X= the name of the service. Thereby rebranding everything and confusing the users.

To Scott: Yup! :)

To Dare: If I had the time I would search for your post that explicitly justified MS's own tendency to let others lead the way into new markets.

I'm not suggesting this is a bad thing all together... make sense, although at the same time it sucks that it kind of has to be this way.

As such, it seems Google is simply following proven patterns of efficient inefficiency.

Google is not in the geeky technology business. They're not in the business of providing IM clients or e-mail service. They are in the Advertising Business - all of these other services are just a way to enhance their core offering which is context based advertising. Microsoft and Yahoo are finally getting this and are playing catch up. Saying that Google is Yahoo 2.0 is pretty naive when viewed in this light.
